How to Water Trees When the Weather Turns Hot and Dry
It is common knowledge that lawns need extra care when hot
weather arrives. Proper watering and mowing are essential.
However, trees, particularly new ones, also require
particular attention. Homeowners should know that the watering of their lawns
may not be sufficient to support their trees through an extended hot, dry
spell. Lawn sprinkling tends to penetrate just a few inches and, particularly
with dense clay soil types, the situation can create a problem for young trees.
A more focused, tree-specific watering is needed, especially
in the early weeks after planting. When watering a tree, a slow flow for longer
intervals is essential to allow the water to reach deeper into the soil to
moisten the tree roots sufficiently.
Frequency: It is not necessary to water frequently.
Since soaking the soil around the roots is the objective, applying about 1-2
inches of water per week usually is sufficient.
Time of Day: In hot weather, watering trees in the
morning allows the water to penetrate the soil before evaporating. Watering
early in the morning provides relief to the tree as the temperature rises.
Method: One of the best ways to slowly apply water to
a tree is to use a soaker hose over an extended period. This moderates how
quickly the moisture penetrates the soil and soaks the roots.
Soil Types: When planting a new tree or shrub,
checking the soil type at each level below the surface is important. Dense,
clay-type dirt will prevent some of the water from penetrating beneath and may
channel the water away from the tree’s roots. Conversely, a very sandy or
granular soil can allow too much of the water to flow straight through to below
tree roots. Homeowners should consult their local arborist or tree nursery
before planting as some soil amendments may be required to achieve the right
balance.
Mulch: Surrounding the base of the tree with about
three inches of wood mulch will help to reduce evaporation and keep weeds from
competing for available water.
